‘We are only just beginning to comprehend this’: an essential work on structural and institutional racism in the UK which has now sold more than one million copies across all editions, comprehensively annotated by the author with close to 1000 words of commentary. Originating from a blog post in February 2014, this extended examination of race in modern Britain continues to educate about the experiences of people of colour and to inspire necessary change. Eddo-Lodge’s annotations stem from an attentive close re-reading of her text – they include frequent emendations and corrections, updates to specific terms, but most significantly they describe the responses to her book and provide a sense of what has changed in the intervening years and what remains the same. The author’s notes re-contextualise important passages for the present day, pointing to policy failures of the current government and to the race and class inequalities exposed by the Coronavirus pandemic.
