Estimate value
€ 1 000 – 1 500
The Artist and the Book, n°259 : "Renoir's only published original book illustration. In the late 1880s, Mallarmé planned a volume of essays on literature and the theatre [to be illustrated by Degas, Renoir, Berthe Morisot and John Lewis Brown]. The plan was not realized and only Renoir's plate was finally completed and published, four years later in Pages. This is one of his early ethings -a medium which he used for the first time about 1890- and illustrates 'Le phénomène futur', Mallarmé's dream of an idealized female form".
In-4 (273 x 194 mm).
First edition, with the famous nude etched by Renoir, his only published original book illustration.
