Private ownership, Germany.
The composition of the present painting on copper with a subject presumably taken from Roman history is based on the larger painting on wood in the Maximilian Speck von Sternburg Foundation in the Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig (Inv. No. 1639). Max J. Friedländer and later John David Farmer attributed the Leipzig painting to Bernaert van Orley; Ben Broos questioned this reference in 1987.
Van Orley generally painted on wood, while painters in his circle or his successors, who occasionally replicated the master's compositions, also used copper as a carrier.
