Opinion:
Dr. Olga Sugrobova-Roth, Düsseldorf

Not to be confused the First battle of Polotsk between the Russian troops under the command of General Wittgenstein, and the French and Bavarian troops under the command of Marshal Oudinot and Marshal Saint-Syr (with the Second battle of Polotsk which happened two months later, almost at the same point) took place on 17. and 18. August 1812. Roubaud is the beginning of the battle, the attack of the French cuirassiers on the grenadiers of the Russian Paul-regiment. The battle of Polotsk was stopped the advance of the French on St. Petersburg. From this Moment the main events of Napoleon's Russian campaign played on the Route to Moscow.
Several artists, including Wilhelm von Kobell, Peter von Hess, as well as the Ukrainian painter F. Tschirko made the First battle of Polotsk on the subject of their works.
Franz Roubauds Talent unfolds in this image in full dimensions. The artist demonstrates the free and temperamontvolle Malmanier, the special Freshness and intensity of the colors, as well as his virtuosity in composing a mass scene.
The Subject of the image, and his Mature style of painting allow the Dating to 1912. The preoccupation with the theme of the Patriotic war against Napoleon, culminating in Roubaud in his famous panoramic image of 1912 "The battle of Borodino".
In the Munich exhibition, 1914, the image under the title of "Borodino 1812, a French cavalry tried the Russian Paul-to throw the Regiment". The note on Borodino as the desire to explain, to bring up the Subject of the painting is the European visitors of the exhibition, for the term "Borodino" is an example for the whole course of the war of 1812 was closer. The Tradition in the family that acquired the image after the exhibition in 1914 and over the generations have preserved, there is the possibility to specify the shown Episode.
