The Flora Danica (Latin for Danish flora) is a botanical encyclopaedic collection begun in
1753 and completed 122 years later by the director of the Botanical Garden in Copenhagen,
Christian Oeder (et al.). In 1790, the Danish Crown Prince, later King, Frederick VI
ordered the first 'Flora Danica Service' from the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in
Copenhagen, which was to bear the drawings of the plant atlas. Complemented by pale
rose-coloured and gold ornamentation, it was intended as a gift for the Russian Tsarina
Catherine II, who died before the service was completed in 1802. Deprived of its original
purpose, the service was kept by the Danish court in memory of the tsarina and is still
used for state banquets at Christiansborg Palace today.
