Rudolf Proksch was an early NSDAP member, joining in 1925, and served on the staff of Gustav Scheel, Gauleiter of Salzburg. During the war he was with the Heer 98th Mountain Troops and fought in Kreta, later returning to the staff of Gauleiter Scheel. Rudolf’s son, Udo Proksch, was an Austrian industrialist involved in a scandal when a ship he owned, the “Lucona”, sank in 1977, killing six crew members. A private investigator located the ship, proved an intentional explosion and the cargo being junk, not uranium mining equipment, for which a huge insurance claim was raised. Investigations were obstructed by several Austrian politicians and ministers who were sentenced for forging documents. Udo Proksch fled to the Philippines and stayed with friend Ferdinand Marcos, returning to Vienna in 1989, where he was arrested, sentenced to life in prison, where he died in 2001. A book, film and stage musical were made about the scandal.
