A Japanese suit of armour, late Edo period
Heavy iron jingasa of eight riveted plates with gilt tehen kanamono in bronze. The interior is lacquered in red, padded ring lining. The front printed with a diamond mon, cotton chinstrap. The edge covered with glued fabric. Diameter 37 cm Brown lacquered, iron ashigaru do, restorations of later date on the inside, the back with a red-lacquer inscription. Height 39 cm. Includes the kusazuri in lacquered leather, sliding on five lames, the lowest lames each with two gold-embossed kiri mon. Also, a pair of shino kote with brown-lacquered metal plates and kusari. Corrosion. The cloth lining heavily worn, with losses here and there. Length of each 67 cm. A pair of sode sliding on five lames, in dark blue and green lacing. Defects in the lacquer, signs of corrosion. Iyohaidate of leather plates in blue lacing. The cloth lining again heavily worn, with losses here and there. Moreover, a pair of lightly chased suneate with black lacquer finish (knocked), kusari with traces of corrosion, the fabric lining stained. Length of each 29 cm.
