Rare French baroque opera, with music, bound by Padeloup le jeune for the Duchesse du Maine. The opera was first performed at the Académie Royale de Musique (the Paris Opera) on 24 April 1713. It takes the form of a tragédie en musique in a prologue and five acts. The libretto is by Simon-Joseph Pellegrin, using the pseudonym “La Roque”. Not in Cioranescu. See L.E. Oblong quarto (191 x 248mm). Engraved title by Roussel after Desmarest, 52 pp. of engraved music, 287 pp. of printed music (age toned). Contemporary French red morocco gilt by Antoine-Michel Padeloup, with arms of the Duchesse du Maine on covers (extremities worn). Provenance: Louise Bénédicte de Bourbon, Duchesse du Maine (1676-1753; binding) – Loren Griswold duBois (1853-1919; bookplate).
