Santorius was the founder of the physiology of me tabolism. He introduced into physiology exact methods of measurement, pulse counting, temperature determination, and weigh in. Santorio ist in der Geschichte der Medizin bekannt durch seine mit bewundernswerter Ausdauer 30 Jahre lang hindurch fortgesetzten Versuche zur Prüfung der Schwankungen, welche das Körpergewicht in verschiedenen physiol. und pathol. Zuständen darbietet, Versuche, welche zur berühmten Lehre von der "Perspiatio insensibilis" führten (Hirsch-H. V, 21). - Das Frontisp. zeigt den Autor vor gedeckter Tafel in einem Balance-Stuhl sitzend zur Vergleichung seines Gewichts vor, während und nach der Mahlzeit. - Frontisp. verso hs.
