Second edition, following the first of 1621, of the most famous artillery treatise of the 17th-century, written by the most important and famous expert of the period. The work focuses on land and naval artillery, guns and bikes, their construction and ammunition, ballistics and the production of gunpowder and saltpetre, its main component.
Folio (364 x 234mm). Engraved frontispiece with the portrait of the author within two cannons surmounted by the coat of arms of the city of Bologna, 23 engraved illustrations of which 9 are engraved plates depicting pieces of artillery, woodcut initials and headpieces (some dampstaining, small tear repaired at 2I2, some plates slightly trimmed at the outer margin). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine (rebacked, modern endpapers, some staining). Provenance: few early maniculae - Emilio Pittaluga (bookplate).
