Lot 4124 | Scheibenfibel, wikingisch, 10. Jhdt.
A Viking disc fibula, 10th century
A Viking disc fibula, 10th century
Slightly domed disc fibula made of two soldered sheet metal discs. The relief of the sheet metal front chased over a model, then decorated with filigree. The rim encircled by filigree. A braided band of eight intertwined loops arranged in a cross on the inside. A spiral and a pair of volutes in the outer spandrels of the loops. A hemisphere with crossed filigree bands appliquéd in the centre, a globule and a small ring in each of the quadrants. The surface fire-gilt. A pin on the back, held by a loop hinge and pin holder, the latter made of contoured sheet metal strips, which are soldered on the rear sheet metal disc. Moreover, a loop with punched decoration soldered on one side. Diameter 5.1 cm Minimal abrasion on the highest points of the relief, especially on the central hemisphere. Otherwise intact. Attractive piece of silver Viking jewellery. The findings of an XRF analysis on silver alloy and gilding are not incompatible with an antique origin and correspond to the values documented from authentic specimens (98.5% silver, remainder: copper and lead. The gilding corresponds to an antique fire gilding with clear evidence of traces of mercury).
Provenance: South German private collection, inherited from the consignor's father in the late 1990s.
