A disc-shaped Viking pendant with cross decoration, 10th century
A disc-shaped Viking pendant with cross decoration, 10th century
Disc-shaped pendant, the background relief chased over a model. A U-shaped, band-shaped extension on the top, which is soldered on the back and thus forms a loop for wearing the pendant. The edge of the front and eyelet encircled by filigree, an S-shaped spiral on the eyelet. A cross inside the medallion, its filigree edge trim extending out into a braided band that winds its way between the cross arms. The interior of the cross set with globules. Weight 5.51 g, height 4.5 cm. Attractive testament to Viking silversmith craftsmanship. The findings of an XRF analysis on silver alloy are not incompatible with an antique origin and correspond to the values documented from authentic specimens.
Provenance: South German private collection, inherited from the consignor's father in the late 1990s.
