Lot 5259 | Schellenbaum der Schutzpolizei Hamburg Altona-Wandsbek
Estimate value
€ 30 000
A Jingling Johnny of the Schutzpolizei Hamburg Altona-Wandsbek
Multi-piece, silver-plated construction, folding down for transportation. The finial in the shape of a Prussian eagle, standing on a cigar with bolts of lightning. Holding in its beak the banner of police-green silk with silver fringe and cords (worn) and the police eagle embroidered in silver on the front, in the large design after 1936. The sun engraved on both sides with medallions, the Prussian national eagle with a swastika and the motto "Gott mit uns". The crescent moon extending out into eagle's heads with 14 alternating attached bells and stars. "POLIZEIPRÄSIDIUM ALTONA-WANDSBEK" engraved on the front and "ÜBERREICHT VOM POLIZEI PRÄSIDENTEN PAUL KINKLER" on the back, along with the engraver's name "C.W.MORITZ" and "BERLIN.W. 1934". The horsetail plumes in the Prussian colours of black and white, as well as red and white for Hamburg. The bell with appliquéd oak leaf wreath and en suite decoration of small bells and stars. Comes complete with the original wooden pole.
Total height 2.25 m. Traces of age and use, due to its eventful history. Of the utmost rarity.
The Jingling Johnny was purchased in 1933/34 for the marching band of the Schutzpolizei Altona-Wandsbek. At the time, both municipalities were part of the Free State of Prussia, which explains the Prussian eagle on the star. Altona and Wandsbek were incorporated in Hamburg following the introduction of the law of Gross-Hamburg in 1938. Includes a reproduced photograph, showing the Jingling Johnny on the police open day in Hamburg-Wandsbek on 19 November 1934, at that time with the old Jingling Johnny cloth.
