Gerundet-ovaler Kampfschild der Asmat aus West-Neuguinea. Der Schild ist im Flachrelief mit Rot und Weiss gefärbten menschlichen Motiven beschnitzt. Er wird durch eine stilisierte stehende menschliche Figur bzw. einen Kopf mit einem stilisierten rudimentären Körper gekrönt, der wahrscheinlich einen Ahnherrn des Besitzers darstellt. Die Extremitäten sind durch Palmbastknäuel angedeutet, die sich auch am Schildrand finden. Die Rückseite des Schildes mit dem integralen Handgriff zeigt ein aufgemaltes symmetrisches Muster aus weißen und orangenen Dreiecken. Die zwei zentralen männlichen Figuren auf der Frontseite stellen wahrscheinlich Krieger oder den Besitzer und seinen Vater dar, die randständigen Figuren sind Gegner oder Gefangene, die durch Opferung bzw. Kopfjagd dem eigenen Clan „einverleibt“ werden. Bei vielen Schilden sind diese zu hakenförmigen Symbolen verkümmert.Bei den Asmat hat der Schild eine besondere Bedeutung unter den Besitztümern des initiierten Kriegers. Oft anzutreffende rundliche Formen können gleichermaßen Früchte wie genommene Köpfe bedeuten, die eine ganz ähnliche Symbolik (Erneuerung und Fruchtbarkeit) innehaben. Die Motive sollen nicht nur die eigene Stärke beschwören und die Verbindung zu den Ahnen herstellen, sondern den Gegner auch erschrecken und schwächen. Der Stil weist auf die nordwestliche Asmat-Region hin. Als Motive beliebt sind auch „Flying foxes“ (eine endemische Art von Riesenfledermäusen) oder der Nasenschmuck des Kriegers aus Muschelscheiben oder Eberzähnen, der Privileg des erfolgreichen Kopfjägers ist. Die Motive waren so angelegt, dass nur initiierte Männer höheren Ranges sie verstehen konnten In der Vorstellung und der Kunst der Asmat spielen die Ahnengeister eine wichtige Rolle. Sie werden in den neugeborenen Kindern reinkarniert. Die Schädel der Ahnen werden manchmal verziert und dienen als Alltagsgegenstände, etwa als Kopfstütze beim Schlafen. Die Schädel erlegter Feinde werden dagegen im Männerhaus aufbewahrt. Wer einen Feind tötet, übernimmt dessen Namen und soziale Pflichten. Diese "Übernahme" ist auf den Schilden oft thematisiert. Die Kleidung der Asmat-Männer beschränkt sich oft auf rituellen Körperschmuck, sonst ist Nacktheit üblich. Zu festlichen Anlässen ziert der Oberschnabel des Nashornvogels, ein Kopfjagdsymbol, die männliche Scham. Die Krieger der Asmat tragen martialische Septum-Piercings (Septum: Nasenscheidewand), bipane. Dabei handelte es sich um flache, bis zu mehreren Zentimeter breite Muschelplatten, deren Form an das Gewaff der Wildschweine erinnert. Geflochtene Ganzkörpermasken werden bei einem Ritual getragen, bei dem der Verkehr der Masken zwischen Dorf und Wald die Verbundenheit zwischen beiden Räumen stärken soll.
