A sled mount for machine gun MG08, 1918
A sled mount for machine gun MG08, 1918
Gun mount 08, late 1918 production, stamped with the number 722 and a faint marking, most likely reading "GfS / 100" (=Gewehrfabrik Spandau). Complete specimen, fully functional. The original padding for shoulder and arm rests made of "Ersatz" material, the seams with original stitching (!), both fairly worn and soiled. Both lock cases with the correct lid and interior (wooden inserts and leather straps). No perforating corrosion or damages. The right side sheet metal insert with a small number of inconspicuous perforations, most likely caused by shrapnel. Complete original gun carrier, including the clamp device with spring bolts. No damage to the guide rail of the gun carrier. Original wood inserts in the grips of the sled stand and the rear legs original and in excellent condition. The gear unit for height adjustment and clamp lever fully functional. The plaque for searching fire made of zinc sheet (rather than brass as on earlier models). Both springs of the sled stand locking mechanism intact. This late, simplified version as built in 1918 no longer came with either the oil/grease nor the spare part container. A right-angled cleaning rod and sleeve pliers fixed to the mount. The mount with the original field-grey paint finish (!) with some scratches and paint loss due to use. No recent refurbishing or repairs/replacements whatsoever. In such an original complete, functional condition a rarity in museum quality, definitely a highlight for any collection of German Great War weaponry. Dimensions with retracted front stand approx. 132 x 60 x 45 cm, weight approx. 40 kg.
