Lot 4171 | Schlüsselgerät 41 Z (SG 41), sog "Hitlermühle" der Wanderer-Werke in Chemnitz
Estimate value
€ 14 000
A cipher machine 41 Z (SG 41), known as the "Hitler mill", made by the Wanderer-Werke in Chemnitz
The "Z" version of the SG 41 cipher machine was referred to as a weather machine. They were intended for use at the secret Wehrmacht weather stations, such as that on Greenland or in the Arctic, and were only fitted with a numerical keypad.
Although the principle of the SG 41 is based on that of the Hagelin machines, it includes a number of significant improvements. This machine was unbreakable using the decryption technology of the time. Very few machines were deployed after 1944 owing to disputes about matters of competence and production problems.
This machine has been cleaned, preserved and repainted in the original colour RLM 83. In the process, the original clear glass panels were glued in and not riveted and the irreparable rotors replaced with replicas. Several small pieces are missing, like the screws for the support in front of the rotor flap, the cap of the upper paper holder and other parts. The machine ist not functional. Comes with the machine's original service manual, the original paper rolls, two wooden rollers, the cleaning brush and wire brush, plus the original ink rollers with the container. Dimensions 27 x 30 x 17 cm, weight approx. 10 kg.
