In den 1950ern noch weich und fließend, wird die umfassende Linie zunehmend expressiv und ausdrucksstark, teils nervös und staccatoartig. Der Künstler bricht so die Form teils mosaikartig auf und gelangt so zu einer abstrahierteren Gestaltungsweise. Da Schmidt-Rottluff 1963 die Ölmalerei gänzlich aufgibt, nehmen die Papierarbeiten eine völlig neue autonome Funktion in seinem Spätwerk ein und stehen als solitäre Aussage seiner künstlerischen Intention. Motivisch konzentriert er sich vorwiegend auf das Stillleben, Gegenstände und Blumen bestimmen die Bildfläche, daneben entstehen Landschaften und seltener Akte. Für die Konturen verwendet er nun oft anstelle eines weichen Aquarellpinsels einen Borstenpinsel, mit dem er mit unverdünnter Tusche direkt auf das Papier zeichnet, wodurch den farbigen Aquarell- oder Kreideflächen ein grafischer Charakter verliehen wird.
