A WOODEN SHRINE FOR A KING FROM THE GROUP OF THE 'FIVE RULERS OF THE GYALPO DEMONS' - Outer Mongolia, ca. 1900 - This shrine is dedicated to the "virtue king" Yon-tan-gyi Gyal-po. The attribution of the name is not certain, especially since the iconographic attributes may vary depending on the school. This king, who belongs to the retinue of the oracle deity Pehar, wears the characteristic hat with a wide brim. He is of iconographic red body color. The face of this king is highly wrathful. His tongue is rolled in egg and he shows his white teeth. On his forehead he wears the third eye - of wisdom. He is dressed in a coat with wide sleeves, wide-cut trousers and Mongolian boots. His attributes are the vajra in his right hand, and on the left a vase for elixir of life (?), with the clasp of a wishing gem. The king's mount is a gray horse or mule (?). It rides over a stylized lake of blood on a lotus. Sculpture; wood, pigments, varnish, worked in two parts, base and auole are made separately; Gungarvaa: wood, frame carved and gilded, pigments. - Important German private collection, collected in the 1970s and 80s, mostly acquired at Schoettle Ostasiatica, Stuttgart.
