Scarce work on the fauna and flora of Pavia and the Lombardy region, with a very rare additional set of plates printed in colours. G.A.Scopoli (1723-88) was born in the Italian Tyrol and studied medicine and chemistry before becoming Professor of Chemistry at the University of Pavia in 1777, where he founded a botanical garden and chemistry laboratory. He was greatly interested in botany and zoology and corresponded with Linnaeus, whose system of nomenclature he adopted. Linnaeus named several plants and insects after him.
3 parts in one volume, folio (411 x 288mm). Engraved frontispieces of each part within architectural border and bound before plates, title-pages with engraved vignettes, 75 engraved plates, engraved headpieces at the beginning of each part by Giuseppe Federico Chiesa and engraved by G. Ramis, engraved initials. Contemporary half-calf with decorated boards, spine with gilt title, speckled edges (some wormholes in the back, ligh wear). (3)
