SEATON, G. (19th c.) "Falstaff and his Page", Depicts the literary figure of Sir John Falstaff, who first appeared in the plays of William Shakespeare. The scene shows the obese soldier, addicted to drink and thuggery, who tends to overestimate himself but is often portrayed as melancholic, on his way to an inn. The name Falstaff is used for braggart as well as for bon vivant, signed at lower right, oil/canvas, 73,5x48 cm (86,5x60 cm with frame). Signs of age.
