STOWE, Harriet Beecher (1811-1896). Autograph letter signed ("H B Stowe" and "HBS") to [James] Osgood, Hartford, 23 September 1873. [With:] Autograph letter signed ("H.B. Stowe") to James Osgood, [n.p.,] 28 February [1873].

One page, bifolium, 150 x 114 mm; Four pages, bifolium, 158 x 100mm.

On securing the copyright for Uncle Tom's Cabin and the production of Palmetto Leaves and Sam Lawson's Fireside Stories. A fine pair of letters to James Osgood, who published some of Stowe's later works including Palmetto Leaves, Oldtown Fireside Stories, and Lady Byron Vindicated. In the September letter, Stowe reminds Osgood, "Some time ago I requested you to secure for the copy right of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Has this been attended to? If not pray do not lose a moment in doing so." Considering that Stowe's U.S. copyright on Uncle Tom's Cabin was not set to expire until 1880, it is unclear why she requested Osgood secure those rights seven years in advance. She closes by informing Osgood that she will be "going to start on a reading tour in the West the beginning of October." The second letter, likely written at the start of 1873, concerns several matters including a title for "the cheap edition[:] Sam Lawsons stories by Old Toms fire side," and adding that she had a illustration that she wanted to include in the new edition. She also writes of her forthcoming novel Palmetto Leaves, asking "is it not yet premature to announce it. I think so — you should have them in time for the hot weather sales." Stowe opines on advertising outlets before asking Osgood to send her a copy of a work by Francis Parkman that she was unable to name: "Will you be so kind as to get & mail to me at once a book of Parkman's on the French & Spanish Settlements in the South – I don't know what the title is but you perhaps can find out. Its' about Florida. I need it for my sketches." Provenance: Walter Benjamin – (sold to) Alfred T. White, 1894 – by descent to the consignor.
