A LARGE GILT- AND BLACK-LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI - Japan, dated fourth year of Keiō [1868] - Seated in vajrasana on a separate carved circular base placed on a separate lotus base sculpted with a row of upturned petals, both hands in vitarkamudra, wearing a monastic garment covering both shoulders and falling in concentric pleats along his body, his face displaying a serene expression with downcast eyes below arched eyebrows running into the nose-bridge, smiling lips, elongated earlobes, his hairdo continuing into the ushnisha and a separate carved flaming halo behind. - From a North German private collection, in the family since the 1980s - Partly restored, wear, traces of age

Auf einem zweiteiligen Lotussockel in Vajrasana sitzend, beide Hände in Vitarkamudra, bekleidet durch ein Mönchsgewand, dass beide Schultern bedeckt und in konzentrischen Falten fällt, feine, meditative Gesichtszüge mit niedergeschlagenen Augen, lächelnden Lippen und mit seitlich verlängerten Ohrläppchen. Das Haar übergehende in die Ushnisha vor einer separat geschnitzten Mandorla.
