Die Erscheinung des Erzengels Michael vor Josua ist eine alttestamentliche Geschichte über die Erscheinung eines Engels mit gezücktem Schwert vor dem Feldherrn Josua vor der Einnahme der Stadt Jericho. A VERY RARE DATED ICON SHOWING THE ARCHANGEL MICHAEL AND JOSHUA, SON OF NUN Russian, Moscow, dated 1876 Tempera on wood panel. Executed with gold details. The gilt background ornately incised. The borders ornately incised and painted in faux enameling. St. Michael is shown an angel with sword drawn, standing before a kneeling man in armor and helmet. On the reverse Cyrillic inscription, dated '1876'. Minor losses. 22.3 x 18 cm. The appearance of the Archangel Michael to Joshua is an Old Testament story of the appearance of an angel with a drawn sword to the commander Joshua before the capture of the city of Jericho. In the Orthodox tradition, the angel who appeared to Joshua is identified with the Archangel Michael.
