Einzeltafel, Eitempera auf Kreidegrund, Goldgrund. 20,7 x 14,8 cm. Der heilige Sisoes der Große war ein Mönch, der ein asketisches Leben in der Ägyptischen Wüste in einer Höhle führte, die geheiligt war von den Gebeten und Segnungen seines Vorläufers Antonius des Großen. Für seine 60 Jahren Arbeit in der Wüste St. Sisoues erreichte er eine besondere spirituelle Reinheit und begann Wunder zu wirken, so dass durch seine Gebete ein totes Kind zum Leben wiedererweckt worden war. Der heilige Sisoes lebte unter der Herrschaft des Kaisers Theodosius, der die Verehrung der heidnischen Götter, zu welchen Alexander gehörte, verboten wurde. Als in Alexandria die Christen einen
Aufstand auslösten, wurde das Serapeum zerstört, wo auch vermutlich Alexanders Überreste aufbewahrt wurden.
