A VERY RARE ICON SHOWING THE FINDING OF THE ICON OF THE KOLOCHSKAYA MOTHER OF GOD Russian, 18th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. The background and border made of gold. The Koloch icon of the Mother of God manifested itself in the year 1413 15 versts from the city of Mozhaisk, in the vicinity of Koloch in the Smolensk governia. A peasant of this village by the name of Luke found the holy icon and took it to his home. One of his household was paralyzed. The sick one put his forehead to the icon with faith and received complete healing. This became known through the surrounding area, and many of the suffering began to flock to the wonderworking icon, and they received help from the Mother of God. Luke afterwards took the icon to Mozhaisk, and from there to Moscow. At the capital, Metropolitan Photius, together with a gathering of clergy and a multitude of the people, met the holy icon. As the icon was carried through Moscow many of the sick were healed of their infirmities. Later they returned the icon to Mozhaisk. At the place where the icon appeared, a church was built in honor of the Mother of God. Here the holy icon was housed. With the offerings of the peasant Luke and other Orthodox, Prince Andrew Dimitrievich built a monastery on this site called the Kolochsk. MInor areas of retouching. 35.5 x 30 cm.

Die Legende des Lukas von Kolotsch berichtet, dass die wundertätige Kolotsch-Ikone der Muttergottes 1413 im Lehen von Fürst Andrei Dimitrievich 15 Werst der Stadt Mozhaisk, in der Stadt Kolocha, in der Provinz Smolensk, erschien. Ein Bauer dieses Dorfes namens Lukas fand die Ikone in einem Baum und übertrug sie mit Ehrfurcht in sein Haus. Die Ikone der Allerheiligsten Gottesmutter vollbrachte zahlreiche Heilungswunder, auf deren Bekanntwerden hin das heilige Bild nach Mozhaisk zu dem Fürsten Andrej Dimitriewitsch gebracht wurde. An der Stelle des Erscheinens des Gnadenbildes wurde von Lukas, der dank der Ikone viel Geld sammelte, zu Ehren der Himmelfahrt der Jungfrau Maria eine Kirche gebaut, in der die heilige Ikone platziert wurde. Lukas erlag jedoch der Versuchung, die der Ikone gespendeten Gelder für sich selbst zu verwenden und einen Palast zu errichten. Eines Tages jedoch fing der Jäger des Prinzen einen riesigen bösen Bären und sagte ihm, er solle ihn an Lukes Hof vorführen. Er befahl, das Tier freizulassen. Der Bär stürzte sich auf Lukas und verkrüppelte ihn. Lukas, der daraufhin reumütig wurde, flehte den ankommenden Prinzen Andrei Dimitrievich an, sein Eigentum dem Allgemeinwohl zugutekommen zu lassen. Mit der Spende von Lukas und anderen orthodoxen Gläubigen, errichtete der Prinz ein Männerkloster an der Stelle des Erscheinens der wundersamen Ikone.
