Rückseitig auf dem Keilrahmen Reste eines alten Etiketts mit Nr. 832. Öl auf Leinwand 66 x 53 cm. Doubliert. Restaurierung. Rahmen min. beschädigt 1796 schuf Anton Raphael Mengs ein Selbstbildnis, das er Don Bernardo de Iriarte (1735-1814) schenkte, bevor er Madrid im Jahre 1777 endgültig verließ (Roettgen 1999, S. 351, Katalog-Nr. 284). Iriarte nahm als ''Oficial Mayor de la primera Secretaría de Estado'' eine wichtige Rolle am Madrider Hof ein. Der bedeutendste spanische Kupferstecher seiner Zeit, Manuel Salvador Carmona, sollte auf Vermittlung Iriartes 1778 die älteste Tochter des Künstlers, Anna Maria, heiraten. Im gleichen Jahr entstand Carmonas Kupferstich nach dem Mengs'schen Selbstbildnis im Besitz Iriartes. Das Aussehen der ersten Fassung des Selbstbildnisses ist durch eine Photographie überliefert. Mit dessen Hilfe lassen sich mehrere nahezu maßgleiche Exemplare des Selbstbildnisses in eine Werkgruppe von Arbeiten einteilen, die in Kenntnis des Originals von dritter Hand angefertigt worden sein müssen. Der frühe Tod Anton Raphael Mengs' im Sommer 1779 löste wohl auch in Spanien eine erhöhte Nachfrage nach dem Bildnis des so sehr geschätzten Künstlers aus. Diese konnte zwar einerseits u. a. durch den erwähnten Kupferstich Carmonas befriedigt werden. Andererseits entstanden die o. g. Ölgemälde nach dem Original wohl auch in diesem Zeitraum. Anna Maria Mengs, der Steffi Roettgen das vorliegende Gemälde überzeugend zuschreibt, verfügte über die beste Kenntnis der Malweise ihres Vaters. Sie war seine Schülerin und enge Mitarbeiterin und somit prädestiniert, Wiederholungen des Gemäldes anzufertigen. Zudem war ihr der Zugang zum Original im Besitz Don Bernardo de Iriartes möglich. Dass sie nach diesem arbeitete, belegt eine Pastellversion des Selbstporträts im Museo del Prado, die traditionell Anna Maria Mengs zugeschrieben wird (Roettgen 1999, S. 333, Katalog-Nr. 284, WK 7). Das vorliegende Gemälde ist das einzige aus der Gruppe der gemalten Wiederholungen des Mengs'schen Selbstbildnisses, für das Roettgen eine spanische Provenienz nachweisen konnte.
