Lot 212 | Selling stories to buy beer
KEROUAC, Jack (1922-1969). Typed postcard signed (“Jack”) to Ed White, postmarked Jamaica, New York, 16 May 1950; one autograph emendation.

"Till next week.”

“All set to go,” announced this penny postcard, which preceded by a few days the beginning of Jack’s journey west: “Oil up the boms of Denver! I just sold a story to Neurotica […] for the express purpose of buying 500 beers for everybody in a single routing, bruiting night.”

After the party for The Town and the City, Kerouac continued on to Mexico with Neal Cassady and Frank Jeffries, where he planned, among other things, to concentrate on writing. Cassady abandoned Jack and Frank in Mexico City, after helping himself to the remaining cash in their wallets in order to get himself home. Jack and Frank survived, wrote letters, and worked on writing about their experiences, a period that led Jack into his Buddhist readings in the New York Public Library.
