A RARE RED-PAINTED SUKUMA WOOD MASK - East-Africa, Tanzania, possibly Bena - An expressive and "modern" looking mask. The oval-shaped face is openworked in the area of the eyes and mouth. The polychrome frame in red, white and black adds to the expressiveness of the collector's piece. - From a German private collection, according to the current owner, formerly part of the private collection Walter Hekster(1937-2012), Amsterdam, the private collection of Ferry Herrebrugh, Amstelveen, the private collection of Hermann Sommerhage, Duisburg - Cf. Tanzania, Masterpieces of African Sculpture (1994), Fig. 235. - Slighty damaged at the fastening holes, metal standSmall cracks on the back. Metal base.
