Lot 2133 | Rare and exquisite storage chest
Tibet. Late 16. Century

Wood with cotton fabric laminated. Paint is original, with pigments and Gold. Brass fittings complete. Unusually painted all the sides of the chest. In an unrestored condition and extremely well-preserved painting shows on the front and back respectively, a pair of Dragons on the side of individual dragons. Density, stylized clouds and spiral tendrils, with Lotus flowers fill the ground. Between the dragon baskets with sacrificial beads gifts and flaming.

The décor shows clear influences of Chinese art. This corresponds to the formation time, as the Chinese Emperor Wanli (1573-1620) worked as a great patron of lamaistic monasteries and Chinese art. The quality of the execution suggest that this chest dates back to the possession of a high-ranking Lama, or a Person of Tibetan aristocracy. Height 38cm, 76 x 34cm. Condition B. The old according to small signs of use, clearer, especially on the upper side.
Provenance/Assessment:
-From the possession of a Buddhist monastery. In the 1990s, purchased on site.
-Private Collection Southern Germany. Acquired in 2010, in the gallery K. Lambertz-Abraham, Düsseldorf. Detailed description and assessment of writing, attached.
