A RARE AND FINE ICON SHOWING THE ANGEL LEADING THE INFANT JOHN INTO THE DESERT Russian, Moscow, early 19th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. The haloes made of gold. Partially restored. The fine icon depicting John the Forerunner being led into the desert by an angel is an impressive example of religious iconography that illustrates the life of John the Baptist, also known as the Forerunner (in Greek, 'Prodromos'). John is highly revered in the Orthodox tradition, as he is regarded as the herald of Christ. In this icon, the youthful John is shown being guided into the desert by an angel, where he spends his life in prayer and penance. This depiction symbolizes his spiritual journey and preparation for his role in proclaiming the coming of Christ. Partially restored. 31 x 25.9 cm.
