Auf dem mit plastischen Blättern belegten Stamm eines Laubbaumes nach rechts bzw. nach links sitzender Papagei, den Kopf seitlich geneigt. Reliefiertes, farbenprächtiges Federkleid in Grau, Gelb, Blau und Rot und mit bräunlich staffiertem Schnabel. Polychrome Malerei. Entw. Johann Joachim Kaendler, um 1745. Unw. rest.; Schwertermarke. H. 14,3 cm.
Von allen Vogelarten hat Kaendler die meisten Ausformungen an Papageien nachzuweisen, laut Archivalien des Jahres 1745. Für diese existieren drei unterschiedliche Entwürfe, ausgeformt in verschiedenen Größen. Mit der Entwicklung des kolonialen Überseehandels waren seit dem 17. Jh. immer mehr exotische Papageien über die westeuropäischen Häfen in fürstliche Volieren gelangt. Da sich deren Haltung hier, insbesondere bei Hofe, als Statussymbol entwickelte, nahmen deren Darstellungen in der Kunst einen großen Stellenwert ein und inspirierten zu deren künstlerischer Wiedergabe in der Malerei und als Plastik. Ab 1731 beauftragte August der Starke den Bildhauer Johann Joachim Kaendler, die kurfürstliche Menagerie mit ihren 460 Tieren in Porzellan zu modellieren. Die europäische Tradition kannte bis dahin nur Tierplastiken aus Bronze oder Stein; asiatische Porzellanvögel dieser Zeit hatten weder die Dimensionen noch den Realismus, den Kaendler anstrebte.
