PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES – A group of seven letters from Presidents from the early twentieth century [including:] TAFT, William H. (1857-1930). Typed letter signed ("W. H. Taft") to former U.S. Representative Charles G. Washburn, New Haven, 14 January 1920. One page, quarto (paper clip stain, unevenly toned at top). An excellent foreign policy letter, lambasting the lack of compromise after the Treaty of Versailles and expresses fear over U.S. relations with the Philippines: "I am thinking of proposing a plank on the subject of the Philippines for the Republican platform. It has been ignored, but it has got to come to the front now," but he fears that the effort would be sidetracked by the "unnecessary controversy over the treaty [of Versailles] in the Senate. It looks now as if there was some prospect of a compromise and an elimination of the treaty from the campaign, although the two extremists in this matter, [Henry Cabot] Lodge and [Woodrow] Wilson, seem to be willing and indeed prefer have the matter go into the campaign rather than to end it by a compromise." * TAFT, William H. Autograph letter signed ("W. H. Taft") to Mr. Walter M. Wilson, New Haven, 27 December 1913. Two pages, bifolium, octavo (light mailing folds, impacting signature.) Praising his correspondent's edits of his panned remarks for a YMCA brunch. * WILSON, Woodrow (1856-1924). Typed letter signed ("Woodrow Wilson") as President to his Secretary of the Treasury William McAdoo, Washington, 29 November 1918. One page, quarto, on White House letterhead. (signature a touch blurred). Sending appreciation for a prior letter supporting the President's trip to France for the Paris Peace Conference, stating it is a "note of cheer in the midst of rather distressing circumstances" and that he feels "strengthened to have your judgement about my going abroad backed and confirmed by your own" [sic]. * WILSON, Woodrow. Typed letter signed ("Woodrow Wilson") a Governor of New Jersey to Mr. J. P. Blair, Washington, 20 February 1911. One page, quarto, (two partial fold separations, one small tear neatly mended with tape on the verso). Declining an invitation. * HARDING, Warren G. (1865-1923). Typed letter signed ("Warren G. Harding") as President to his friend Mr John C. Shaffer of the Chicago Evening Post, Washington, 17 May 1921. One page, bifolium, quarto, on White House letterhead (mounting remnants on the verso). * HARDING, Warren G. Typed letter signed ("Warren G. Harding") to Mrs. W. R. Meech, Marion, OH, 12 January 1921. One page, bifolium, octavo (tape remnants on the verso from prior mounting). Thanking his correspondent on behalf of Mrs. Harding for Meech's hospitality during his and his wife Florence's visit to Norfolk, praising the "hospitable spirit of your community". * COOLIDGE, Calvin (1872-1933). Autograph letter signed ("Calvin Coolidge") as President to Bartley J. Costello, Washington, 27 August 1923. One page, quarto, on black-bordered White House letterhead (mounting remnants on the verso). Responding to a prior telegram, Coolidge sends his appreciation for the assurances of friendship from the "Ancient Order of Hibernians of the State of Vermont".
