A BRONZE INKSTAND REPRESENTING A SEATED SATYRESS, BY SEVERO DA RAVENNA, EARLY 16TH CENTURY

The Satyress is seated on a tree stump and in her raised right hand she holds the base of a candlestick. Her left arm and hand are free of her body. The hand would originally have rested on the left shoulder of a young satyr (now missing), as in the cast in the Museo Nazionale de Bargello, Florence. The group was conceived as an inkstand, the holes in the tree stump for the quills, the candle to give additional light and a hole in the base to the right of the Satyress's left hoof indicating a further component (now lacking), most probably a shell for the scribe's ink.

The present cast is an extremely fine example of this model and must date from the early period of Severo's career, his workshop in Ravenna probably being set up soon after his return from Padua in 1509. Perhaps the most prodigious of its kind in early sixteenth-century northern Italy, this foundry was exceptional for the number of replicas it produced. It continued to function long after Severo's death, probably initially managed by his son, Niccolò Calzetta, who in 1543 was described as "magister Nicolaus q. magistri Severii Calcete sculptor de Ravenne".
