Estimate value
£ 1 000 – 1 500
FREUD, Sigmund (1856-1939). 'Über den Ursprung der hinteren Nervenwurzeln im Rückenmark von Ammocoetes (Petromyzon Planeri).' Offprint from: Sitzungsbericht der kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, LXXV, III. Abtheilung. Vienna: k.k. Hof- und Staatsdruckerei, 1877.

First edition of Freud's first published paper. 'Freud's second piece of student research, on the function of the large Reissner cells in the spinal cord of primitive fish Petromyzon, was assigned to him by Professor Ernst Brücke, head of the Institue of Physiology in Vienna, where Freud had been admitted in the fall of 1876. Freud showed that the Reissner cells "gave rise to the root-fibres of the posterior roots" (Standard edition III, p.228). Freud's investigation of the Reissner cells appeared in print three months before the publication of his first original piece of student research, on the gonadic structure of the male eel' (Norman F1).

Octavo (246 x 157 mm). Pp. [1] 2-13 [3], one lithographic folding plate (insignificant faint marginal spotting to plate). Original brown printed wrappers, unopened and uncut (large split to joint of wrappers but still just holding, front wrapper fractionally chipped at head and rear wrapper with tiny chip to fore-edge). Provenance: Imperial Academy of Science (stamp on front wrapper).
