Lot 166 | Signed photographs from the Paris Peace Conference
PARIS PEACE CONFERENCE – WILSON, Woodrow (1856-1924) A set of four photographs signed by Wilson together with other Allied leaders and representaives, [Paris, 1919].Three photogravures (302 x 305mm, 442 x 410mm and 318 x 210mm). (Light scattered foxing and browning, the largest also bearing marginal chips and tears.) One photograph (330 x 216mm). (Mild silvering.)A superb set of signed photographs from the Paris Peace Conference including the "Big Four," kept by the journalist John E. Nevin (c.1875-1933) who accompanied Woodrow Wilson on both of his trips to the Paris Peace Conference at Versailles. Of particular interest is an Army Signal Corps photograph of the "Big Four" seated in a library, signed by, from left to right, Vittorio ORLANDO (1860-1952), David Lloyd GEORGE (1863-1945), Georges CLEMENCEAU (1841-1929) and Woodrow WILSON. A larger Allied Signal Corps image shows 23 Allied leaders and delegates standing and seated including Vittorio ORLANDO, Woodrow WILSON, Robert CECIL (1864-1958), Jan SMUTS (1870-1950), Makino NOBUAKI (1861-1949), K.V. Wellington KOO (1888-1985), Edward M. HOUSE (1858-1938), Roman DMOWSKI (1864-1939) and others. The third, a photogravure of Wilson seated in an open coach with French President Raymond POINCARÉ (1860-1934) is complimented by a classic Harris & Ewing photograph of Wilson, signed as President and inscribed in the lower margin: “To John E. Nevin, a true friend and a true lover of his country, with the affectionate regard of Woodrow Wilson.”[With:] Conditions de Paix. Conditions of Peace. [Paris, 1919]. Marked "Epreuve avant tirage definitif" (trans. Proof before final printing). Includes one folding map, Frontiéres Orientales de l'Allemagne. Eastern Boundaries of Germany. With slip affixed to top of title noting the inclusion of only the map of Germany's eastern frontier.Parallel text in French and English, 1 large folding lithographic map inserted between pages 48 and 49, 740x 1045mm. Penciled marginalia throughout (torn along lower left and separated from volume, other marginal tears and losses). Printed paper wraps (tears and loss to bottom margin, back strip torn). Provenance: John E. Nevin (per inscription by Wilson).
