Kurz vor 1800 entdeckten die Maler die Landschaft, die sie umgab wieder neu. 1785 schufen Ferdinand und Wilhelm von Kobell für den Mainzer Kurfürsten einen Landschaftszyklus der fränkischen Gegenden. Hier wird die Landschaft topographisch genau wiedergegeben. Etwa zur selben Zeit nimmt die Landschaftsmalerei auch in München ihren Neuanfang. Die Künstler ziehen mit ihren Skizzenbüchern auf das Land hinaus, um zukünftige Gemälde vorzubereiten. Zu den ersten Malern, die sich der bayerischen Landschaft annehmen, zählen Johann Georg von Dillis, Johann Jakob Dorner d. J. und Max Wagenbauer. Dillis' Bruder Cantius, Simon Warnberger und Ludwig Neureuther schließen sich an. Dem bayerischen Kurfürsten Max IV. Joseph (ab 1806 als König Max I. Joseph) gefällt diese neue realistische Malerei sehr gut. Und so hat die Akademie der Künste schließlich auch eine Landschaftsklasse, ein bisher nicht vertretenes Fach.

Schnell finden sich Mäzene und Auftraggeber, so der Staatsrat von Kirschbaum als Sammler oder der Dietramszeller Forstrat Mathias von Schilcher, der den Künstlern Unterkunft gewährt und bei ihnen Bilder bestellt. Schließlich gibt der König selbst für Schloss Nymphenburg einen großen Landschaftszyklus in Auftrag (1811-13). Gegen 1825 - mit dem Tod von König Max I. Joseph - endet diese erste Phase der Münchner Landschaftsmalerei.

Der gebürtige Pullacher Simon Warnberger war Schüler des kurfürstlichen Hof- und Jagdkupferstechers Johann Georg Winter. Von Anfang an interessierte er sich fast ausschließlich für die Darstellung von Landschaften, die als Zeichnungen, Aquarelle, Radierungen und Lithographien Gestalt fanden. Erst nach 1800 studierte Warnberger an der Akademie auch die Malerei. 1810 ernannte man ihn zum königlichen Hofmaler. An dem erwähnten königlichen Auftrag für großformatige Landschaftsgemälde, die für das Nymphenburger Schloss bestimmt waren, war Simon Warnberger mit einer Ansicht des Staffelsees beteiligt. Und in eben jenem Jahr, in welchem dieser Zyklus fertiggestellt wurde, datierte Warnberger auch die vorliegende Ansicht des Staffelsees. Das Nymphenburger Gemälde zeigt den See von exakt demselben Standpunkt aus, aufgrund des Hochformats wird aber lediglich der Bereich zwischen der Kirche am Ufer und dem rechten Baum wiedergegeben.
