STUDIO OF SIR ANTHONIS VAN DYCK ('Flemish: Antoon van Dyck') 22 March 1599 Antwerp - 9 December 1641 London MADONNA WITH THE CHILD FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE DUKE OF SUSSEX Oil on canvas (old relined). 51 x 66 cm (F. 80 x 63 cm). Verso: On the stretcher three old London auction numbers of Christie's auction house: '368 HZ' and '350 KM' as well as 'KL 269'. Part. slightly old rest., min. old retouching. Frame. The subject comes from van Dyck's early Italian creative phase. Altogether eight workshop repetitions of the subject are known, which are in different collections, among others in the museums of Turin, Gent, New York and Munich as well as various international art collections. The variant offered here from the collection of the Duke of Sussex is also very probably one of the repetitions executed in van Dyck's workshop. Provenance: Collection Duke of Sussex, Kensington Palace, London (Prince and 6th son of King George III Duke of Kent), Kensington Palace, London (Prince and 4th son of George V) - deceased plane crash 1942 - Duchess Marina of Kent.
