Watercolour and opaque paints, gum arabic on ivory. Image size: 11.3 x 9.2 cm. Ivory slightly wavy. Slightly stained lower left. Brass frame, mounted in a frame with stand, covered with wine-red velvet (17.4 x 15 cm), minor damage.
Cf. the portrait miniature of Sir William Charles Ross in the collections of the Musée Condé, Château de Chantilly (inventory number OA 1700). This sketchy depiction corresponds in composition and dimensions (11.7 x 9.6 cm) to the present, completed version. The miniature in the Musée Condé was owned by Henri d'Orléans, duc dAumale.
