The Luohan are the disciples of the historical Buddha, who were revered in China from around the 7th century for their ascetic and exemplary lives. As disciples of the Buddha, they are recognisable by their shorn heads and monk's robes. They symbolise the teachings of the Buddha that linger in the world, which they guard until the future Buddha Maitreya will appear and a new age will begin.
