Rare and ephemeral popular pamphlets printed in Lisbon and detailing life in Brazil. These folhetos, provided a perfect medium for disseminating stories to audiences eager for news about the colonies. The present collection of rare pamphlets, not designed to stand the test of time, vary in subject matter but all concern journeys to or life in Brazil: from military victories and religious missions to one sensational fictionalization of Rio preparing for war.
Comprises:
1. [CORRÊA, João de Medeiros (fl. 17th-century)]. Relaçam verdadeira de tudo succedido na restauraçaõ da Bahia. Lisbon: Pedro Crasbeeck, 1625.
Account of the Iberian Union’s siege, naval blockage and eventual recapture of the city of Salvador in Bahia, the capital of colonial Brazil, which had been taken by the Dutch one year prior. Bibliotheca Brasiliana, p. 216.
2. [MENEZES, Francisco Xavier, 4th Count of Ericeira (1673-1743)]. Relaçam da vitoria que os Portuguezes alcançaraõ no Rio de Janeyro contra is Francezes, em 19. De Setembro de 1710. Lisbon: Antonio Pedrozo Galraõ for Manoel Diniz, 1711.
Account of the Portuguese victory over the French at the Battle of Rio de Janeiro in 1710, including the names of the soldiers killed, wounded or taken prisoner. With the “21. de Fevereyro” publication date. Rodrigues 2577; Bibliotheca Brasiliana p. 566.
3. LEONARDO, Manoel Ferreira (fl. 18th-century). Relação da viagem, e entrada, que fez o Excellentissimo e Reverendissimo Senhõr D. Fr. Miguel de Bulhoens e Sousa, Sagrado bispo de Malaca. Lisbon: Manoel Soares, 1749.
Recounts Miguel de Bulhoens e Sousa’s journey to Brazil having been appointed coadjutor bishop of Pará after serving as Bishop of Malacca. The title-page features a large woodcut of the arms of the Dominican Order. Bibliotheca Brasiliana, pp. 466–67.
4. Relaçam, e noticia de varios successos acontecidos no Brazil. Lisbon: Domingos Rodrigues, 1754.
A very rare fictitious pamphlet (folheto de cordel) detailing preparations in Brazil for war following the arrival at Rio de Janeiro of two warriors from the “Ilha de Moçambique” (Island of Mozambique). Bibliotheca Brasiliana, p. 712.
5. HERFELLN, Jacó (fl. 18th-century). Relaçam verdadeira da tomada das praças que na America fizeraõ os francezes aos inglezes. Lisbon: Domingo Rodrigues, [c.1755].
Extremely rare Portuguese report on the French and Indian war, detailing the “location of French and British military forces in 1755, giving details for those about to embark for America” (John Carter Brown Library).
6. Relaçam verdadeira em que se dam a ler as victorias dos Portuguezes contra os Gentilos. Lisbon: Domingos Rodrigues, 1757.
“This narrative refers to Gomes Freire’s campaign against the Indians of the Missions. It is quoted by Southey and Varnhagen, and is one of the best Portuguese sources of information for this campaign which inspired the poem Uraguay. First of all, you should register to be able to purchase at auction. Choose a lot from the upcoming auction and the maximum amount you want to place on it. After confirmation of your choice, we will send your application by e-mail to the appropriate auction house. If the auction house accepts a request, it will participate in the auction. You can view the current status of a bid at any time in your personal account in the "Bids" section.
Auctions are performed by auction houses and each of the auction houses describes their terms of auction. You can see the texts in the section "Auction information".
The results of the auction are published within a few days after the end of the auction. In the top menu of the site, find the tab "Auctions". Click on it and you will be on the auction catalog page, where you can easily find the category "Results". After opening it, select the desired auction from the list, enter and view the current status of the interested lot.
The information about the auction winners is confidential. The auction winner will receive a direct notification from the auction house responsible with instructions for further action: an invoice for payment and the manner in which the goods will be received.
Each of the auction houses has its own payment policy for the won lots. All auction houses accept bank transfers, most of them accept credit card payments. In the near future you will find detailed information for each case in the section "Auction information" on the page of the auction catalog and the lot.
Shipment of the won lot depends on its size. Small items can be delivered by post. Larger lots are sent by courier. Employees of the auction houses will offer you a wide range to choose from.
