First edition—one of the rarest of Dickens's works in the original monthly parts. The Sketches first appeared in various periodicals from 1833 to 1836, with the exception of "A Visit to Newgate," "The Black Veil," and "The Great Winglebury Duel," which are first published here. The Preface is dated February 1836. With the advertisements called for by Hatton & Cleaver, including the 'Address' in part II and the 'Proclamation' in part V. Hatton & Cleaver pp.89-128; Eckel pp.13-14.



20 monthly parts, octavo (225 x 143mm). 40 etched plates by George Cruikshank (short marginal tears in one plate in pt.XIV repaired, a few stains). Original printed wrappers (wrappers faded, extremities a little frayed, rear wrapper of pt.VII repaired affecting a few letters of text, small part of upper margin of front cover of pts.XII-XIII excised, wrappers of pt.XIV with some small repairs, wrappers of pt.XX supplied in unobtrusive facsimile without advertisements). Morocco box gilt. Provenance: Edward Ferraby (inscription on verso of 4 plates, dated 1839) – Boston University Libraries (bookplate to chemise) – Christie's, South Kensington, 1 June 2009, lot 88.
