Description: Inside insert for matches with three small, bevelled compartments.
Measurement: 5x8, 5x5, 5cm.
Mark: Inside on rim inscribed Alph. Giroux Paris. On the topside if the lid sign. 'FD BTÉ' for Ferdinand Duvinage.
In 1799, François-Simon Giroux (1775-1848) opened a shop for artistic woodturning and
carpentry in the rue du Coq-Saint-Honoré. In the following century, the business was
continued by four generations of the Giroux family, the last owner being Ferdinand
Duvinage, a cousin of the family, whose widow ceased business activities in 1885. Maison
Giroux was known for its extremely high-quality luxury items. Works by Giroux can be found
today in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and others.
- Overall in good condition typical of its age, with the corresponding light soiling and rubbing. - The ivory with slight dry cracks.
