The American politician Thomas H. Seymour (1807-1868) was governor of the state of
Connecticut from 1850 to 1853 and became envoy to Russia from 1853 onwards. There he spent
four years intensifying the alliance with Tsar Nicholas I (1825-1855) and his son
Alexander II (1855-1881). It was in this context that he must have received the lidded
tankard presented here as a gift. Judging by the second inscription, he gave it to a
Charles Carter at an unknown date.
- Overall with beautiful, typical old patina including the corresponding rubbing and fine, superficial scratches. - The partial gilding on the outside somewhat more heavily plastered. - The lid hinge with slight play.
