Lot 489 | Soldera, Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Case Basse 1988
Estimate value
£ 4 200 – 5 500
Gianfranco Soldera (who tragically passed away in 2019) was an Italian winemaking genius. His grandfather had made wine, but lost the vines as he was opposed to Mussolini. In 1972, Soldera revived his grandfathers tradition and planted Sangiovese in the Case Basse plot of Brunello di Montalcino. The galestro schist vineyard makes for robust yet elegant Sangiovese. After 2006, he blended his two vineyards, Case Basse and Intistieti. Older vintages such as 1988 and 1990, are therefore sought after and are beautiful expressions of black olive tapende, balsamic, plums, truffles and incense. The 2013 offering here is the first after Soldera withdrew from the Brunello di Montalcino Consorzio. The lovely labels with their delphine label represent Dionysius in dolphin form, a famous birdbath sculpture at the estate.
