Savely Sorine is one of the most sophisticated graphic artists of the Silver Age period in Russian culture. A World of Art exhibitor, Sorine gained an unquestionable standing among the exacting connoisseurs of graphic portraiture. Having emigrated to Paris in 1920, he exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Tuileries. His exquisite pastels were eagerly ordered by the Parisian nobility, ensuring that Sorine enjoyed a high status as a fashionable artist. After moving to the USA, Savely Sorine held a series of triumphant vernissages and so won the attention and love of the New World too. The work Girl with Ballet Shoes, now presented for auction, was produced by the artist in his mature years. The unusual excitement in his interpretation of the model, the elegant pastel shade and the delicate colouring indicate that Sorine is a great master, whose talent emerged from the best years of a remarkable era.
