SOUSAPHONE MARTIN WITH MOUTHPIECE AND CASE Elkhart, Indiana, USA, 1927 Sousaphone tuba made of brass, three valves with mother-of-pearl inlay. H. ca. 80, w. 86, bell diameter 66 cm. Marked on the bell 'Martin Handcrafted Elkhart Ind.', on the valves and bell serial number '76344'. With large lockable wooden case (h. 55, w. 107, d. 96 cm) marked 'Crescent Temple Band Trenton'. The sousaphone is a low brass instrument used in brass, jazz music and especially in marching bands. It was developed in the 1890s by John Philip Sousa and is distinguished by its characteristic upward-curving design, which allows the player to carry the instrument on his shoulder. The sousaphone is the successor to the helicon. A renowned manufacturer of sousaphones was the Martin Band Instrument Company in Elkhart, Indiana. Auf dem Schalltrichter bez. 'Martin Handcrafted Elkhart Ind.', an den Ventilen und am Schallbecher Seriennumer '76344'. Mit großer abschließbarer Holzkiste (H. 55, B. 107, T. 96 cm) bez. 'Crescent Temple Band Trenton'. Das Sousaphon ist ein tiefes Blechblasinstrument, das in der Blas-, Jazzmusik und insbesondere in Marching-Bands eingesetzt wird. Es wurde in den 1890er Jahren von John Philip Sousa entwickelt und zeichnet sich durch seine charakteristische nach oben gebogene Bauweise aus, die es dem Spieler ermöglicht, das Instrument auf der Schulter zu tragen. Das Sousaphon ist der Nachfolger des Helikons. Ein renommierter Hersteller von Sousaphonen war die Firma Martin Band Instrument Company in Elkhart, Indiana.
