Im Sommer 1905 entdeckt Max Liebermann nach langen Jahren wieder Nordwijk, mit seinen kilometerlangen Sandstränden und Dünenlandschaften. Seit 1901 hatte er sich Holland zu seiner Wahlheimat erkoren und verbrachte regelmäßig die Sommermonate dort. Stilistisch wird seine Arbeit nach der Jahrhundertwende immer stärker von den französischen Impressionisten geprägt. Farbe, Licht und Bewegung treten immer mehr in den Vordergrund seiner Werke. In den folgenden Jahren entstehen zahlreiche Strandbilder mit Spaziergängern, Badenden, spielenden Kindern und Reitern am Strand. Die vorliegende Studie zeigt einen Ausschnitt auf das Meer von den Dünen aus und Spaziergänger am Wasser. Mit einer begrenzten Farbauswahl und schnellem, skizzenhaftem Strich, erfasst der Künstler eine Atmosphäre, die den Betrachter den kühlen Wind und den Geruch sowie Geschmack des aufbrausenden Meeres erahnen lässt. Der Maler wählt bewusst das Pastell als Medium, das ihm mit seiner malerischen und zeichnerischen Qualität, stimmungsvolle Momentaufnahmen ermöglicht.
