Lot 9586 | Stahlhelm für die Kamikaze-Besatzung von Shinyo-Sprengbooten, 1944/45
Estimate value
€ 4 500
A steel helmet worn by the crew of Shinyo kamikaze boats, 1944/45
Thick steel skull with a slightly ogival-shaped profile, a steel reinforcement plate at the front, fixed with two rivets on each side. Approx. 20% of the original grey paint finish preserved, an orange-coloured anchor outlined in red lacquered at the front. Three-piece leather liner with a small linen pocket on the back (minor losses and tears in the fabric) on a leather lining ring, attached to a strap of khaki-coloured cotton (somewhat stained), fixed to the skull at three points. Slightly damaged in places, signs of age. Extremely rare Shinyo or naval kamikaze helmet.
Kamikaze were one-man motorboats, hundreds of which were built in 1945 as the ultimate defence against the expected invasion of Japan. Like the kamikaze planes, the motorboats were steered by one man and equipped with a bow-mounted charge of 270 kg explosives with an impact detonator that would be ignited near the enemy's hull. The helmet was designed to protect the Shinyo crew from enemy fire directly before carrying out their suicide mission.
