The creator of this painting, Stanislas Lépine, was a pupil of the important representative of the Barbizon School, Camille Corot. The group, which met in the small town of Barbizon near the forest of Fontainebleau, is characterised by a deep longing for originality. Landscape motifs under the influence of daylight and the weather were particularly attractive. It seems windy and yet there is a bustle of activity at the harbour in Rouen, France. The cloudy sky and the waving flags indicate the slightly stormy mood. Despite this, the painting radiates an almost contemplative calm.
