Smith Mountain, Ernst (1831 Basel, 1903) Counterparts. "The Apple shot", 1878/79 and "Gesslers death", 1878/79. European chemicals Bureau (the final version), on canvas. Arc-shaped. The ca 52x67 cm or 53,5x67 cm.
In connection with the construction of the collapse of the tell's chapel on the lake of URI, organized by the Swiss Kunstverein in 1877 a competition for frescos. Not least, with the idea to promote tourism in Central Switzerland. Smith mountain filed four scenes to Schiller's Wilhelm Tell; "Apple shot", "Tell's leap", "the rütli oath" and "Gesslers death". He was Reserved for the first prize. Especially the oath evoked in the URI government Protest, as the artist had portrayed two of the swear figures kneeling. Smith mountain adjusted in the final version. It is character studies of people from nearby Bürglen; they were then exhibited in various cities such as Zurich, Basel, Berne and Geneva, and not only because of their artistic, "but also historically and ethnographically correct execution" admired, such as the newspaper der Bund wrote.
